Birth grant in Israel in 2026: how much and when

Last reviewed: · How we check information

In short

  • The birth grant (maanak leida) is a one-off Bituach Leumi payment to every mother who is an Israeli resident or married to one, even if she did not work.
  • The amount depends on the child's place in the family: ₪2,103 for the first, ₪946 for the second and ₪631 for the third and later (2026). Twins: ₪10,514.
  • After a hospital birth it is paid automatically into the mother's bank account. You claim only after a birth abroad, an adoption or surrogacy.
  • It is separate from the maternity allowance, which replaces working mothers' wages.

Who qualifies

  • An Israeli resident, or the wife of an Israeli resident — even if the birth was abroad.
  • A non-resident may qualify if she worked in Israel during the pregnancy, or her partner worked in Israel for 6 months in a row before the birth, and the birth was in Israel.
  • A live birth, or a stillbirth after 22 full weeks.
  • A home birth: if you reached a hospital within 24 hours and stayed at least 12 hours, or a doctor or midwife reported the birth to the Ministry of Health.
  • Adopting a child under 10 (not your partner's child), and surrogacy.

How to get it

  • Hospital birth in Israel: automatic, once the hospital reports the birth. At a first birth you give your bank details at the hospital.
  • Home birth: automatic, once the Ministry of Health reports it.
  • Birth abroad, adoption and surrogacy: claim online or at a branch. After a birth abroad you can also get hospital costs refunded up to the grant amount, with a receipt.
