Pregnancy risk allowance in Israel in 2026: who qualifies, how much and how to claim

Last reviewed: · How we check information

In short

  • The allowance is paid to employed or self-employed women who had to stop working during pregnancy for at least 30 days because of a medical risk to them or the baby, or because the job itself is dangerous and no other role was found.
  • You need 6 months of Bituach Leumi contributions out of the 14 before you stopped work.
  • The daily amount follows your wage — the higher of the last 3 months over 90 and 6 months over 180 — up to ₪350.47 a day (2026).
  • A Bituach Leumi gynaecologist decides. If the claim is rejected you can appeal.

Who qualifies

You must meet all the conditions:

  • An Israeli resident, employed or self-employed, with 6 months of contributions out of the 14 before you stopped work. Self-employed women must be registered and pay contributions on time.
  • A medical reason arising from the pregnancy (such as early contractions), or the type, place or way of work puts you or the baby at risk with no alternative role.
  • The first period must be at least 30 days in a row. Any later period, at least 14 days.
  • You get no other payment for the same days, such as sick pay or employer insurance. If you have sick days saved, you choose: use them or take the allowance.
  • Travelling abroad during medically approved leave cancels the allowance. Leave approved only because of the work does not.

How much

  • Daily amount: wages for the 3 full months before you stopped work divided by 90, or for 6 months divided by 180 — whichever is higher.
  • Maximum: ₪350.47 a day (2026). Work it out with the calculator.
  • Payment arrives about 30 days after the leave starts. Income tax, Bituach Leumi and health contributions are deducted.
  • The first day can be up to two weeks before the first medical examination that found you need the leave.

A teacher who starts the leave during the summer holiday is paid from the day she was due back at work.

How to claim

  1. Fill in the pregnancy risk claim, signed by your employer and a gynaecologist, and attach medical documents.
  2. A Bituach Leumi specialist gynaecologist reviews it and decides: full or partial approval, or rejection. You see the decision in your personal area.
  3. Every month, by the 20th, report whether the leave continues or ends: 08-6509934 or the personal area.
  4. If the leave lasts until a hospital birth, you don't need to report the end: the maternity allowance starts automatically.
