Weighted disability percentage calculator: how impairments combine
With several impairments, a medical committee does not add the percentages. The largest impairment counts in full, and each further one only on the capacity that is left. So 20% plus 10% is 28%, not 30%. The calculator does this and shows every step.
Calculator
Enter the percentage for each impairment.
This follows the committees' method. The percentages themselves come from the list of impairments, and only a committee sets them.
How weighted disability is calculated
- Sort the impairments from largest to smallest.
- The first counts in full. For example 20%.
- The next is taken from what remains: 10% of the remaining 80% is 8%.
- Add them: 20% plus 8% is 28%. Continue the same way for each impairment.
The same method is used for general disability, work injuries and the income tax exemption committee.
Which percentage you need
- General disability pension: at least 60%, or 40% if one impairment is at least 25%. A degree of incapacity is then set as well.
- Special services, for someone not receiving a disability pension: at least 75%.
- Income tax exemption under section 9(5): at least 90%, with one impairment of at least 40%.
- Work disability: a one-off grant from 9%, a monthly pension from 20%.
Some impairments are recorded by the committee but left out of the general disability total, because they are deemed not to affect working capacity. So the committee's final figure can be lower than the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Why is 30% plus 20% not 50%?
Because each further impairment is counted only on the capacity that is left. After 30%, 70% remains, and 20% of that is 14%. The total is 44%.
What percentage do I need for a general disability pension?
At least 60%, or 40% if one impairment is 25% or more. The degree of incapacity for work is assessed too.
What percentage do I need for the tax exemption?
At least 90% weighted, with one impairment of at least 40%, or blindness. The exemption is under section 9(5) of the Income Tax Ordinance.
Does the committee round the percentage?
The calculator shows the exact result to one decimal place. The percentage in the committee's protocol is what counts.
